The Sokoto State Commissioner for Finance, Engineer Muh
ammad Jaɓɓi Shagari has stated that Governor Ahmad Aliyu has achieved significant milestones across all nine priority areas outlined by his administration to drive transformation in the State. According to Shagari, the achievements span key sectors including security, education, healthcare, agriculture, water supply, infrastructure, youth and women empowerment, economic development, and social welfare.
Security
In the area of security, the Commissioner explained that the administration has prioritized the protection of lives and property. This includes strengthening security agencies through the provision of automobiles, motorcycles, and operational equipment for the military, police, and other security outfits. The government has also enhanced community policing to foster collaboration between residents and security agencies, and established a Community Guard corps to support local security operations. Similarly, stakeholders engagements are regularly organized to address insecurity, particularly in areas affected by banditry. In addition, relief materials and humanitarian support are provided to victims of attacks.
Education
On education, Jaɓɓi Shagari noted that the government has taken concrete steps to improve teaching and learning conditions. These include the renovation and construction of schools, building new classrooms to reduce overcrowding, and improving the learning environment for students. “Scholarships have been provided, especially for girls under the Adolescent girls initiatives for learning and empowerment (AGILE) programme, while new teachers have been recruited and trained”, he said. The government has also supplied furniture and learning materials, and introduced Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes to equip youths with practical skills. According to Muhammad Jaɓɓi Shagari, financial support to students studying within and outside Nigeria has also been increased so as to have future skillful manpower across all areas of human endeavour.
Healthcare
Since assuming office, “The administration of Ahmed Aliyu has embarked on the renovation of hospitals and healthcare facilities, alongside the provision of essential medical equipment and drugs”, Jaɓɓi Shagari stated. The recruitment and training of healthcare workers have further strengthened service delivery while ongoing upgrades of both primary and secondary healthcare centres aim to enhance access to quality healthcare across the state.
Agriculture
In agriculture, the government of Ahmed Aliyu has focused on boosting food production and supporting farmers. Fertilizers, improved seeds, and agrochemicals have been distributed, alongside tractors and modern farming equipment. Farmers are being trained in modern agricultural techniques, while soft loans and irrigation support have been provided, particularly for dry-season farming.
Water Supply
Efforts to improve access to clean water according to Muhammad Jaɓɓi Shagari include, the construction of boreholes and rehabilitation of water facilities in both urban and rural areas. Major water schemes in Illela, Gagi, and Mabera have been upgraded to ensure steady supply. The State Water Board has also been strengthened through the provision of water treatment chemicals, equipment maintenance, and fuel for operations.
Infrastructure
On infrastructure, the government has undertaken extensive road construction and rehabilitation projects across Sokoto metropolis and rural communities. Street lighting has been installed to enhance security and commercial activities. The Sokoto Finance Commissioner also noted that, markets and commercial centres are being developed and upgraded, while transportation systems have also been improved to ease movement within and outside the state.
Women and Youth Empowerment
Engineer Muhammad Jaɓɓi Shagari however, explained that the administration has implemented programmes aimed at empowering women and youths through vocational training in areas such as tailoring, phone repairs, and other trades. Financial assistance and startup tools have been provided to support small businesses, while initiatives to promote girls’ education and encourage participation in leadership have been intensified.
Economic Development
The government is actively promoting investment and supporting small-scale enterprises. Ongoing renovation of the Sokoto central market is part of efforts to boost commercial activities and improve the business environment.
Social Welfare
In the area of social welfare, Shagari stated that, “The government has ensured the prompt payment of salaries, pensions, and allowances”. He reiterated that “Support programmes for vulnerable groups include the distribution of food and essential items, as well as emergency assistance to victims of disasters such as floods and conflicts. Housing and relief materials are also provided where necessary”. Engineer Muhammad Jaɓɓi Shagari emphasized that, these initiatives are improving the quality of life for citizens and ensuring inclusive governance. He added that the government will continue to introduce more people-oriented programmes to further enhance living standards in Sokoto State.
